COVENTRY’S longest running resident music night for drum and bass rave events, Gamma Funkula looks set to end after many years at the forefront of the Midlands’ scene.
Growing from a small scale event with just 3 big DJs and 2 MCs, it has since grown to 7 big DJs (2 international acts included), a live stage show and 5 MCs, putting on regular raves at Coventry’s Kasbah nightclub which people have travelled throughout the Midlands to see.
The revival of Gamma Funkula all those years ago in Coventry saw an end to over a decade in the city of a decent drum and bass night. DJ’s such as Andy C, Hype, Hybrid, Goldie & Doc Scott as well as nurturing some of the homegrown drum and bass talent within the area. To celebrate the rise of Gamma Funkula, Coventry Kasbah is hosting the biggest rave yet on Bank Holiday Weekend, Sunday 29th May running from 7pm until 9am and the promoters promising something pretty fuckin special and would love all past and perhaps new Gamma virgins to make the final bash go with a bang.
This event sees a range of music across three rooms introducing artists who haven’t played at Gamma Funkula before, and some they are welcoming back after a long time. For the first time ever, Gamma Funkula welcomes drum and bass legend Congo Natty live on stage. This collective are responsible for bringing all things reggae into drum and bass so what better way to see them live than with Tenor Fly, Rebel MC and vocalists Nanci & Phoebe showcasing such groundbreaking tracks as Police In Helicopter and Code Red, rocking Kasbah with a unique blend of reggae and hip-hop-fused drum and bass.
Marking the occasion as extra special, Gamma Funkula is flying in DJ Marky from Brazil, to celebrate its very last event. Marky is a household name, known throughout the world for his discography and turntablist tricks of cutting, mixing, scratching and even lifting! We’re pretty fucking excited about this man coming to Kasbah!
He will be accompanied by MC Stamina and Danny Byrd, who is recognised for his peak party sets and mix of hip hop and garage. Bryan Gee also returns to Gamma Funkula after never before performing for them since its resurgence in 2008, accompanied by MC Funsta with support from up and coming DJs Noizee B, MC Toddler, Ruption and Midlands DJs Omnitrix and Dr Phil.
Aside from the main arena, Gamma Funkula will also be hosting ‘The Sahara Desert’ in a side-room, which sees the brand go back to its roots, playing jungle and drum and bass music from the nineties. Headlining the side room is drum and bass legends Randall & MC Fats and Dr S Gachet & MC Moose.
These artists are regulars at most Gamma Funkula events so there is no more fitting way than to have them headlining the final Gamma Funkula night. Also playing will be superstar DJ Nicky Blackmarket and MC Spyda.
